IMMIGRATION, EMIGRATION, AND DISPERSAL

In one study, we radio-tagged 8 young owls in rural and 14 young owls in suburban populations in and around Charlotte, North Carolina, to compare juvenile dispersal in the two environments.11 We followed the birds until they settled down, usually within a few months of leaving their natal ranges, and discovered that young in rural nests dispersed farther (4.2 km) than those from suburban nests (2.7 km). The owls in our rural study areas nested in patches of woods surrounded by fields. When the young started to disperse, they had to cross these open areas to get to the nearest forest. If they found a neighboring pair already in residence, the dispersing juveniles would have to push on to the next remnant of forest, and so on. In contrast, the suburban owls in large part found hospitable habitat surrounding them, so they could find an unoccupied neighborhood in which to settle closer to their natal range than the rural young.
